Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

I've seen this on tumblr. What I love is that it's a bunch of people using rape apologia to make fun of a rapist--ie, joking about rape. I guarantee you most if not all of those people would say it's not ok to joke about rape.
Cuz apparently I gotta break this down for you dense motherfuckers- I'm trans feminine nonbinary. My pronouns are they/them.

I believe people have a problem with making light of rape, not making jokes about it.

Pretty much. Most people are profoundly bad at talking about such emotionally charged shit as rape, so you end up with blanket statements like "rape jokes are bad" even when it seems that most people are willing to hear a humorous take on the subject provided that there's at least a smidge of empathy involved somewhere. That's part of why the Tosh thing got so quickly out of hand--the dude is a shock comic who dances on the edge of what audiences will tolerate, so even though he wanted to take the topic to a place of empathy, some audience members simply didn't have any faith that he would or could do so.

The original story may be horrific, but even it it were entirely fictional, I personally think it's the best demonstration of the absurdity of slut-shaming that I've ever seen.
My son makes me laugh. Maybe he'll make you laugh, too.
Maj's new icon makes me laugh. I -just- noticed that.

I don't think joking about rape apologia is the same as joking about rape, in the same way that a joke about hot dogs is not a joke about dogs. So while I agree that "don't joke about X if X might cause someone somewhere unwarranted discomfort" is a stupid position of stupid people, I disagree that holding that stupid position is inconsistent with making fun of rape apologists.Prak_Anima wrote:I've seen this on tumblr. Sadly, you are only half right. Both groups exist. The former recognize that certain cultural attitudes can condone or encourage rape, and want to change those attitudes in order to reduce the frequency of rape. It's a respectable movement with a respectable goal - cause less people to be raped by abolishing the culture that trivializes the act....You Lost Me wrote:I believe people have a problem with making light of rape, not making jokes about it.
The latter recognize that hearing rape jokes can be distressing to individuals (you know, like rape victims), and therefore should be a taboo for the sake of avoiding causing discomfort to those individuals. You could argue that these people are well-meaning morons, but they are definitely morons - Russia is right now protecting homophobes from the discomfort having to acknowledge that homosexuals exist, and nobody (sane) is applauding the horrible human rights violation that that is. This group frequently borrows "rape culture" and "rape apologia" terminology to smear detractors, upgrading them from well-meaning morons to part of the fucking problem.
The dickwolves debacle started when the second group showed up to yell at the PA guys for a rape joke that in no way trivialized rape. The first group didn't show up until the PA guys responded in a way that suggested they might be attacking the notion of rape culture entirely (which I still think is a bit of stretch - I think both sides would have been better off telling the people initially offended to shut their fucking mouths and stop pretending they knew what rape culture meant). The heckler in the Tosh controversy called out "actually, rape jokes are never funny," and falls solidly in the second group, and you can go forth and find feminists who both agree and disagree with her.
The problem I have with "Rape jokes are never funny" people is that most of them feel that jokes about [murder, bestiality, genocide, paedophilia, physical non-sexual assault] can still be funny, and I can't find some kind of difference other than "this specifically makes this person feel bad". (Though people should still generally consider their audience when making jokes - and yes, if you're Jimmy Carr, your audience obviously knows what to expect and that's why they're there, so fill your boots.)

It's in part because being raped can still get you persecuted and so rape victims are viewed as vulnerable in a way that victims of other crimes typically are not. Also, the existence of apologia means that people are just generally more comfortable if you avoid jokes that make you sound like you sympathize with rapists or holocaust deniers.

It is, though, in the same way that a joke about dogs is a joke about canines. Rape apologia is a subject related to the broader subject of rape. To joke about a rapist "obviously wanting to be set on fire, what with being dressed in such flammable clothing, is to joke about rape, by lampooning one of the social attitudes about rape. In much the same way that I'm not criticizing the jokes, I'm criticizing the hypocritical attitude which some or most of the people who made them may or may not have.DSMatticus wrote:I don't think joking about rape apologia is the same as joking about rape, in the same way that a joke about hot dogs is not a joke about dogs.
